Malawi Flood Visualization & Report

A comprehensive analysis, visualization and reporting of available historical data to assess the social and economic impacts of the 2015 flood disaster.

About Client

An East African NGO, a social enterprise whose mission is to build the data science ecosystem in Africa, mobilizing scientists, engineers, academics, companies, NGOs, governments, and institutions towards solving the region’s most pressing problems.

Client Goals

To develop a one stop platform for the text extraction of text from image, audio and video files.

Business Challenge

Determinas, through its parent company, Information and Data Analytics Foundation (iDAF), signed up to the data visualization and reporting challenge hosted by Zindi, with support from UNICEF, 2030 Vision, and ARM, to revisit the devastating floods that hit Malawi from January to March 2015. The objective was to interpret and generate insights from the available data, and come up with original visualizations/written reports that explore the impact of the floods.

Solution

Following Zindi’s challenge requirements, the team carried out comprehensive analysis on the available historical data to assess the social and economic impacts of the 2015 flood disaster, and followed with visualizing the insights, before putting them in a report. If selected, at the hands of UNICEF, this report could serve as a formal source of information in the humanitarian sector to guide the key players in the sector towards taking the best, data-led decisions with respect to managing or preventing major humanitarian crisis that could follow natural disasters like flooding.

Value Delivered

Poor people in Malawi are disproportionately exposed to devastating natural disasters such as rural floods, and certain regions are likely to experience more of these disasters in the future due to climate change. The value our project is bringing to the humanitarian sector is valid, data-led insights, predictions, and advice to the key economic players of countries prone to disaster strikes like this, to adopt and execute policies that would protect their most vulnerable citizens from the aftermath of disasters, as well as support their access to opportunities of relief.
